Possibly, but don't you think that accountability for one's actions is important. In today's society there is very little accountability. Parents refuse to believe little "Johnny"/"Jane" is doing drugs, got into a fight at school, cheated on exams, and so on. We excuse people who steal from us with excuses like...he/she had a bad childhood, they never had a pet, etc. Everyone is so concerned with their kids having an X-Box, iphone, ipad, they are forgetting how to parent. Most of the kids in Matawan are good kids. BUT, they believe their local drug dealer is their "buddy." At HS graduation, they cheer for their "buddy." Which sends the wrong message. Let's get back to parenting so our children are raised to be accountable for their actions.

BTW, we adults have to show accountability as well. Remember the Mayor of a local town who was caught taking a bribe? Well, I do and I also remember people saying what a good guy he is even after he got caught.

Just thought I'd put my two cents into this discussion. We may or may not need more Police, but we certainly need ACCOUNTABILITY. We should be setting an example for our children, afterall, they are the adults of tomorrow.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7099245919524883845.post-51689723052925871802011-02-07T10:07:23.563-05:002011-02-07T10:07:23.563-05:00A police officer shot three times in Paramus after...A police officer shot three times in Paramus after a "routine" car stop turns into a pursuit and a woman shot in Hazlet several times over the weekend. The average homeowner in the township pays approximately $1200.00 per year in municipal taxes. Using simple math that equates to approximately $100.00 per month. So for $100.00 per month, each homeowner receives 24-hour police services, trash collection, road maintenance, snow removal, leaf removal, and other services offered by the municipality. Now lets assume that out of that $100.00 per month, $70.00 goes to the police. That means if the township were to abolish its police department, the average taxpayer would save approximately $840.00 per year. Taking it a step further, if we were to abolish all of our municipal services we would still only save approximately $100.00 per month. Now back to the police. Can someone please explain to me where we taxpayers could receive round-the-clock protection from a professional, educated, experienced, and well trained staff such as our police department whose competence shields our town from potential liability for $70.00 per month? The answer is that you cannot. So rather than worrying about police officer compensation, try being thankful for getting a great bang for your buck. And for those of you who refuse to accept the facts and continue to whine about a compensation package that equates to an average annual cell phone bill, I believe the applications for police officer will be out in a few months.Happy Feetnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7099245919524883845.post-45772484902955177882011-02-05T12:32:24.387-05:002011-02-05T12:32:24.387-05:00Poster at February 3, 2011 8:23 PM obviously is a ...Poster at February 3, 2011 8:23 PM obviously is a fucking dumb ass and does not know his facts... Matawan police are very community minded and always involved with the school. I know by experience that when my children were in Ravine Drive in the late 90's early 2000's the officers were there on there own time for Dare Graduation, Crossing Guard party I believe it was,Field day, and many other functions. They would be playing with the kids and trying to befriend them. That is priceless if they reach just one that is troubled. You don't see that anymore. I am sure that someone will say that they were there on overtime. They were not, they volunteered. The officers are still in the department and it would be a sad day if the Matawan police share services with another department when there is plenty of money that needs to be redistributed.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7099245919524883845.post-56097821589640510132011-02-04T19:31:25.901-05:002011-02-04T19:31:25.901-05:00If we consolidated law enforcement with the County...If we consolidated law enforcement with the County, the County would be paying towards it. It doesn't seem that anyone is complaining about the crime that they are hired to handle. What they are saying according to the Independent is that they won't be as visible and unable to be proactive with the cut in officers. Proactive is what deters crime. According to stats on Wikipedia, as of 2000 there were 3531 households in Matawan. Formerly the police department had 23 officers, bringing back the 2 officers they laid off totals 22. This does not include the suspended chief of police (Wishful Thinking). I am going to guess at the departments yearly budget, including health plans, etc....($3,000,000). I also believe I am on the high side and don't feel like waiting weeks for the very slow Borough hall in Matawan to get the exact statistics. This does not including what the town gets back from the court revenue generated by the police (like it or not). Thats 850 dollars a year of taxes per household go to the police department soup to nuts. That is $2.32 a day. Not sure how the apartment complexes are taxed and I am sure that the household numbers have gone up since 2000. You get 24 hour a day protection all year long with a fully staffed working portion of the police department for the price of a coffee, per household. Just doesn't make sense that the town can't afford them when they are getting about $10,000.00 plus from each of those households in taxes.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7099245919524883845.post-21864099177391819992011-02-02T18:06:36.953-05:002011-02-02T18:06:36.953-05:00I agree at what price? What does it cost to run the Matawan and Aberdeen police departments? It is obvious that the school is the tax burden in Matawan and Aberdeen. Crazy salaries for a few months work (once you take out the holidays, snow days, conferences, spring break, etc....)and talk about childish, showing up to a BOE members house and picketing. I haven't seen any police officers picketing. According to the paper they are trying to handle the situation like adults. That is most of the police officers in Matawan. The leader is still kicking and screaming eating up money that should be saving these 2 jobs. It is time for these councils to put there foots down and refuse to pay. Let the school district figure out how to handle the financial crisis also. As for the articles in the paper, from what I understand it was time for the residents to see what is going on in Matawan and not hidden anymore. This was a common practice by the former administrations. Last few months in little ol Matawan, 2 home invasions, a knife wielding man, and a wanted subject who shot a man at close range in Alabama (I believe). But it is a sign of the times.

Nothing will change financially when the Alston case is resolved. If anything, it might cost Matawan more. Your theory of "I'll gladly pay you tomorrow for a hamburger today" doesn't work. As a matter of fact, the Democrats tried that, when they held the majority, and put Matawan in a deficit of over $300,000. What happens if Alston goes for treatment, who do you think will pay.

Totally agree about the Board of Education. They have been a thorn in the side to Matawan-Aberdeen taxpayers for a very long time. I recall teachers picketing a member of the Board's home. They are great right now because of the snow and ice but what about the rest of the year? They do nothing but patch holes in the road. They don't cut grass anymore cause the borough has hired outside service. They havent done any work which results in opening the roads etc... cause they hire outside. Might as well hire outside to remove the snow also. They won't have to remove the snow or maintain the train station parking lot next year after NJ Transit takes it back. I am sure the police will still have to patrol it. So what the hell does the road department do? They have alot of coffee breaks. I know that, just by seeing the trucks parked at QC numerous times of a day. I also have seen them in the QC on Cliffwood Avenue during the day. Oh and those trucks are pretty new that you seem to only see during the snow storms or the QC parking lots. There are plenty things that could have been done rather then cut the only department in town that gives 24/7/365 service to the community. Here is another. Is there a reason that Matawan has 5 fire departments? Has to be money in there somewhere that can be cut. I have said in the past that the first aid is a problem and any funds there should be cut back. As an older man it concerns me that they seem to never go out when called and another town has to cover the call. I do have friends from the different emergency services in town and a police scanner. Listening to them and the scanner it is obvious that the first aid is not dependable and almost never comes out. Yet they just got a brand new ambulance. Well there are a few examples of poor spending in Matawan. He is the mayor and has made himself available, I will give him that. But he is a politician first and would never mess with the fire department and the ridiculous amount of engines and buildings nor the first aid. Why you ask?
