On This Veterans Day

The following are excerpts from President Kennedy’s Veterans Day speech in 1961.

Today we are here to celebrate and to honor and to commemorate the dead and the living, the young men who in every war since this country began have given testimony to their loyalty to their country and their own great courage.

I do not believe that any nation in the history of the world has buried its soldiers farther from its native soil than we Americans -- or buried them closer to the towns in which they grew up.

We celebrate this Veterans Day for a very few minutes, a few seconds of silence and then this country's life goes on. But I think it most appropriate that we recall on this occasion, and on every other moment when we are faced with great responsibilities, the contribution and the sacrifice which so many men and their families have made in order to permit this country to now occupy its present position of responsibility and freedom, and in order to permit us to gather here together . . .

For our part, we shall achieve that peace only with patience and perseverance and courage -- the patience and perseverance necessary to work with allies of diverse interests but common goals, the courage necessary over a long period of time to overcome an adversary skilled in the arts of harassment and obstruction.

There is no way to maintain the frontiers of freedom without cost and commitment and risk. There is no swift and easy path to peace in our generation. No man who witnessed the tragedies of the last war, no man who can imagine the unimaginable possibilities of the next war, can advocate war out of irritability or frustration or impatience.

But let no nation confuse our perseverance and patience with fear of war or unwillingness to meet our responsibilities. We cannot save ourselves by abandoning those who are associated with us, or rejecting our responsibilities.

In the end, the only way to maintain the peace is to be prepared in the final extreme to fight for our country -- and to mean it.

As a nation, we have little capacity for deception. We can convince friend and foe alike that we are in earnest about the defense of freedom only if we are in earnest -- and I can assure the world that we are . . .

On this Veterans Day of 1961, on this day of remembrance, let us pray in the name of those who have fought in this country's wars, and most especially who have fought in the First World War and in the Second World War, that there will be no veterans of any further war -- not because all shall have perished but because all shall have learned to live together in peace.

To my fellow veterans in Monmouth County,

Allow no one to diminish our military service, injuries and the ultimate sacrifice of our comrades to be belittled, ridiculed or politicized. Our proud service has allowed all of our fellow Americans and countless millions worldwide to live free each and everyday.

To those of you reading this post you should know that there are 36,000 military veterans residing in Monmouth County.

Thank you to all our vets!

What I find most admirable about veterans is not only have they risked their lives for our safety and for love of this country, but most have done it with extreme humility.
True heroes.

The previous post titled *do nothing* post had a couple idiots attack nesction with little more than lame slander. As a society more attention is paid to those who seek to diminish and embarrass those whose clear thoughts and opinions give proof and credence that counter those who protect the inept, corrupt and the political bottom feeders that most despise. Don't concern yourself the couple or maybe one who posts under multiple anonymous posts really only allow all of us to laugh at them not with them. I think nsection post was quite telling and very well stated. I did not serve but feel strongly that
not enough is done for our vets for too long now.

For all of those who served and continue actively, I extend a heartfelt thank you. I always point out veterans as well as actively enrolled military to my young children to make them aware of your importance to this great Country. I also want them to realize the enormous risk that was taken and sacrifice made for the rest of us. I bow my head in honor and respect for all of you. Thank you and God Bless all of you.

So let me get this straight. Someone calls Nsec Joe a name and he/she is "an inept, corrupt political bottom feeder." I thought it was someone calling him a blowhard. But you are right about one thing...not enough has been done for us and thank you for noticing.
Please keep that thought as you and others who feel so strongly about these men, and their sacrifices, place American flags at the graves of these brave men at a national cemetary every year. May you come to understand the pain, both physical and mental, of these men as you visit them at VA hospitals. And finally, may your heart come to realize the joy of giving as you deliver a Thanksgiving turkey to some lost dependant of a man, or women, who has fallen to war. Thank you for all that.
Yes, thank you for noticing that Veteran's day AND Memorial day is more than just a "day off." May God keep you and your family from the horror of war.

I say keep it up nsectionjoe and those like him. Special Education Costs in New Jersey, 2006-2009

Data Universe on App.com shows Matawan paying almost $5,000,000.00 in 2008 and 2009 for sending kids out of district? Now that is ridiculous.

What is even more ridiculus is bringing them back to district and then blaming them for the test scores! The board of special ed. has been working on getting these kids back into the district. The problem is there isn't anywhere to put them, it costs a fortune, and the schools they are going to are wonderful with all types of programs. They come back here, stick them in one classroom all day, cut the CST, and expect them to blossom.

Anonymous said...

Sorry but $5 million is just ridiculous. It seems that Matawan is won of the highest in Monmouth County. Why is that? If I understand it right we are not talking about handicapped children we are mostly talking about the kids that don't listen and are nothing but a problem in school. BYE BYE dropout if you can't behave in your school district. This no left behind crap is ridiculous. Way to easy on kids these days.

State of NJ says if a kid gets expelled for bad behavior - then you are responsible for their education and no matter where they go his/her home district is repsonsible for the tab-

So if the gov. of NJ wants to really help waste of money in education - get rid of that rule. You would not waste anymore on those who do not want to be educated, help those that do, and scare a few into towing the line...

Anonymous said...

Joey, you saw everything that was going on in this district. In your opinion is this the board of special ed as some insinuate. Are things being done to accommodate board members with special interests?

Aberdeener said...

No. The people who used to attend BOE meetings as the "public" now attend as members. The ongoing joke was that we had destroyed our audience by elevating everyone to board member status.

If you go to a COW meeting today, excluding personnel, reporters, and former board members, there's only one regular attendee to represent the public.

For the most part, the board members were highly involved before becoming board members.

As for the BOE having a special focus on special ed, I never witnessed that.

Anonymous said...

There's only one part that Joey W. got right. The board members were "highly involved" before becoming members. Highly involved in ballooning the special ed. budget. Joey, himself, only knows a piece of the story bc his info only comes from a small slanted group. Just look at the $$$ in that dept., count up the teachers, aides and special purchases. It will not be able to sustain itself. When O'Malley leaves and those parents have to hear the word "NO" some truths might come out.

Aberdeener said...

You're wrong. Look at the numbers. In the past two years, we reduced out-district placements, reduced costs, reduced personnel, and, if Dr. Delaney had his way, we'd have gone a whole lot further.

Anonymous said...

Wrong again, Aberdeener. The question was asked when board was voting on Out of district placements this school year and Dr. O'Malley said that it was about the same as last school year. You must have been absent that day.

Aberdeener said...

Not wrong. Out-district placements are down by 10% since Schweitzer first took over. Between reduced placement costs and legal expenses, we're saving hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. Reduced personnel is another couple hundred thousand.

Anonymous said...

What do you mean by saying if Dr. Delaney had his way? What was his way?

Amominous said...

This was supposed to be about Veterans' Day and the servicemen and women who go into harm's way to protect us. Instead once again it's a never ending thread about the Board of Education (Dr. O'Malley, BarZa, janitors, etc). With the omnipresent Norm Kauff thrown in for seasoning.

Aberdeener said...

Just the opposite. It's cheaper to keep the kids in-district. If you think the cheaper solution is to give parents what they want for their children, then I'm happy to oblige.

Then keep the kids in the district period. $5,000,000.00 is obscene. This is not a babysitting clinic. If you are not able to educate the kid here in district then let them drop out. As for children that do need special education do to a "real" handicap etc... That should be made available. I am sure the majority of your special ed kids are nothing more then trouble making punks that do nothing but cause problems so we flip the bill to send them to these pre jail schools all over the state. Put it to an end and let these kids write their own ending.

3. Then "BP Christie" shows up and spouts something about everybody being guilty of aiding and abetting if they know something about corrupt goings on at the town hall and don't say anything. (By the way, the moron is right.)
4. Finally, some guy starts complaining about special interests and 5 million dollars for special ed and that most of these kids are just troublemakers and should be tossed out of school.
(Sorry, everybody gets an education under the law and constitution no matter who or what they are).
And that my dear folks is what happened.

Anonymous said...

Never said throw them out of school. Just let them be and they will leave on there own. If they can't handle being in the district that they are raised in then oh well. Move along.

Anonymous said...

The question is; Why are these kids "problem kids" that disrupt the rest of the class?

Maybe they are bored because they are more advanced than the rest of the class, and decide to entertain themselves, because they aren't challenged with the current work being taught.

or

They can't keep up with the pace of the class and decide to give up on trying. Then get themselves in trouble because they too are bored sitting there listening to something they don't understand.

But of course, nobody wants to separate these kids into tracks as they used to call it years ago. They say it "labels" kids. Everybody is trying to be so politically correct, and not label the kids, but ignore the fact that their learning needs are not being met.

I am not advocating sending children out of district, I am simply saying I think it is more damaging throwing kids into one general pile, than separating them according to their needs.

I've heard the argument that the more advanced kids pull up the slower learners, but I don't see that as being the case. The only thing it might do is make the overall class average (grades) look better. I don't see it helping any of the kids, no matter what end of the spectrum the kid falls on.

Thank God for Joey Warren , and his posse, led by the great Dr. Dick. If it weren't for them swooping into town, and taking charge, we would still have those evil, deplorable, public employee janitors that actually live in town, you know, the ones from the wrong side of town, with the zip codes ending in 21, and 35. We would have never gotten the chance to entrust our schools to those nice outsiders that we have now. YUCK! Even worse, we wouldn't have a mission statement, could you imagine how terrible that would be?

Anonymous said...

Dear "I Will Say it Again"
Please elaborate on your comments.
"Some kids, their backgrounds, their parents, or various other reason do not make them ACCOUNTABLE"

What various other reasons are you speaking of? What do you mean by their backgrounds? And in your opinion, what percentage of the "problem kids" fall into your description?

say it again said...

I am just saying various kids - from all walks of life from all parts of the district- regardless of socio-economic status or what ever else labels kids.... maybe it came out wrong.

All kids who could care less about school or where they are headed and whose parents dont care, stopped caring, or cant control them - I cannot give a percentage. If a kid makes a choice to not participate positively in the school atmosphere and procees to make it bad or negative to their cohorts - then they do not deserve the education others are there to get.

That was my point. NOthing more, nothing less. Get them out - maybe it will scare some into turning it around - but right now, from what I see and hear from those in the know, kids know they have the schools by the balls because they cant get rid of them. EDUCATION is a PRIVLEDGE - actually a FREE education is a privledge - if you blow it - pay for it your self and when parents are forced to do so maybe they will take more charge as well.

Say It Again
Fine, your point is taken about kids who refuse to be a positive part of the school community, and choose to cause disruptions to the class and other students learning experience.

My point is bad behavior warranting a child to be expelled probably doesn't occur in kids younger than 8th (maybe 7th) grade. So what is going on from K thru 7th that these kids don't feel like part of the school community or changes their outlook on getting an education. Pass any K-3 school and most kids look pretty excited about going to school.

I go back to my earlier post about kids being bored in school because they are not being separated into homogeneous tracks or whatever one wants to call it. I'm not using it as an excuse or sugar coating it, I just know if a kid is not mentally engaged in what is going on, they are going to be bored in school sitting there for 6 hours a day. And to clarify, I am not talking about "entertaining kids" so they are not bored. I'm talking about engaging them in the work so their brains are mentally challenged, but not to far beyond or below their own abilities.

My point is, if a kid is not being properly placed or challenged in a class they act out and misbehave. And I feel, if the school system continues to ignore this year after year, a kids behavior gets worse and worse.

I have teens, I have pre teens, I don't think they are aware that state law mandates a town pay for a kids education in or out of district. Many adults aren't aware of state law, for that matter.

I think the system of lumping kids in one class so the "higher" kids pull up the "lower" kids is a bad system. I think it contributes to kids getting bored in school and misbehaving.

After reading the Independent it seems the only people surprised by O'Malley stranding us in the middle of the year with no superintendent was Chucky and Brooklyn Joey. The whole community knew he was just using us to get either a state job or a bigger school district. Kenny said the contract binds the district but not the superintendent. He, along with Joey, are the ones who negotiated and re-negotiated the contract. It seems they did what was best for him and not what was best for us. Finding a quality leader in three months, and in the middle of the year, will almost be impossible. Thanks again board of special education.

After reading the Independent, it seems to me the president of the Edison Township Board of Education, Gene Maeroff, thinks very highly of Dr O'Malley. And is quoted as saying "O'Malley is a certifiable leader in the areas of curriculum and instruction." And, "O'Malley is a dynamic person who accepts no excuses for failure and wins the respect of educators."

It is amazing how some on this blog just create lies and think the rest of us are so dumb to believe them.

Aberdeener said...

What's amazing to me is that Edison could have taken the easy route and hired a guy nobody ever heard of. Instead, they recruited the single most exposed superintendent in the entire state. No doubt, the blog will be getting lots of traffic from Edison.

MANY TOWN REPRESENTATIVES PROFESSIONALS, MANAGEMENT AND COUNCIL LEADERSHIP PEOPLE USUALLY FLOCK TO AC DURING THE LEAGUE OF MUNICIPALITIES MEETING HELD ANNUALLY AT THIS TIME OF YEAR. IT IS A FREE FOR ALL AT TAXPAYER EXPENSE OF COURSE. IT IS PORTRAYED AS A CHANCE FOR OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS TO MEET AND GREET THE VENDORS, SEE THE NEWEST EQUIPMENT, MEET SALES REPRESENTATIVES AND MINGLE AND HAVE FACE TO FACE TIME WITH GOVERNMENTAL LEADERSHIP AT ALL LEVELS. THAT IS PURE BULLCRAP. IN REALITY AC IS LITTLE MORE THAN A TAXPAYER PAID VACATION FOR ELECTED OFFICIALS TO GET GLOBS OF MONEY FROM THE HEAVY HITTERS IN THE POLITICAL GAME UNDER THE TABLE OF COURSE. THAT MAY HAVE CHANGED THIS YEAR THOUGH? LET US HOPE THEY HAD MANY MANDATORY ETHICS CLASSES, LEADERSHIP ACCOUNTABILITY AND PUNISHMENT, HONESTY ABOVE ALL TYPE ACCOUNTING CLASSES ON HOW NOT TO SPEND THE TAXPAYERS MONIES ON UNNECESSARY AND WAY TOO COSTLY PROFESSIONAL FEES, FEES CHARGED WITHOUT OPEN AND FAIR TO THE TAXPAYERS PROFESSIONAL BIDDING PROCESSES AND NOT THE NORMAL WINK, WINK, NUDGE, NUDGE LIKE WITH NORMAN KAUFF AND HIS FLUNKIES DO EACH YEAR. MY TOWN IS A JOKE BUT WHAT IS PARADING AROUND AS LEADERSHIP IN ABERDEEN IS A CRIME.
LEADERSHIP IN MY MATAWAN IS A LOST CAUSE AND HAVE BEEN FOR TOO MANY YEARS NOW.
AS A FORMER RESIDENT OF ABERDEEN HAVING LEFT THAT TOWN TEN YEARS AGO IT MAY STILL BE SALVAGEABLE IF THEY CAN ONLY STRAP LIE DETECTORS TO THE LEADERSHIP 24 HOURS A DAY AND TURN TOWN HALL UPSIDE DOWN TO SHAKE NORMAN KAUFF AND ALL HIS ENSLAVED AND CORRUPT COUNCIL PEOPLE OUT OF THE TAXPAYERS WALLETS AND PURSES. BETWEEN TAKE MY BETS VINCI AND THE SEX CRIMES MANAGER MARCHING LOCK STEP WITH NORMAN KAUFF ALL THESE YEARS AND THE CREATIVE ACCOUNTING BY THE SAME ACCOUNTANTS ALL OF THESE YEARS NOW IT IS AMAZING THAT NOT ONE OF THEM HAS BEEN CAUGHT FOR TAX EVASION. THE BEST THING I HAVE HEARD LATELY IS THAT THEY WANT THE PROPERTY NEAR ME ON 516 TO BE BOUGHT FOR OPEN SPACE. IT IS OPEN SPACE NOW. ABERDEEN IS LAUGHABLE. IT IS LONG PAST THE TIME FOR THEIR LEADERSHIP TO WAKE UP AND SMELL THE SUBPOENAS COMING IN THE WIND. IT SMELLS TAXPAYER REFRESHING TO ME.

Poetic Norm AKA Councilman Cannon said...

Today, I bring you the story of a man so slick,

Around town, he's known simply as Dr. Dick,

He rode into town on a white horse named Kenny,

And down on his knees went Warren, the BENNY,

Dick soon gained friends on the Board of Education,

By giving Joey's Republican friends an illicit donation,

In April of '09, Dick didn't raise the school tax,

But, for real Aberdeeners it was no time to relax,

'Cause in June of '09, Dick made his first play,

He told Warren and Kenny it was time to pay,

So Warren rose from his knees and wiped off his face,

Called Delaney and Hayward, and gave Dick an embrace,

Then, they all reached in to the taxpayers' coffers,

And gave Dick and his friends huge f*cking offers,

"9 percent, 10 percent, 7.3!"

"Dick's the second-coming!" yelled the BOE,

At the time this was happening, the taxpayers all raved,

But Warren swore the raises were less than Dick saved,

The taxpayers all knew it was too good to be true,

When taxes don't rise, we ask, "Where's the other shoe?",

The other shoe dropped in 2010,

When state aid to schools was cut yet again,

Warren and the Board had no such foresight,

And now, they found themselves in quite the plight,

Cut taxes or teachers? That was the call,

Then Dick said: "Janitors, let's cut them all!",

Kenny only cared about his kid's special nurse,

Donaghue only cared about his wife's paycheck and purse,

From Warren, Delaney always took his leads,

And the rest of the bunch have kids with special needs,

So, Warren again dropped to his knees,

And Dick didn't even have to say, "Please?",

All Dick did was help Delaney's campaign,

By mailing his postcards, and ensuring his gain,

Soon thereafter, they were all on Dick's ship,

Sailing to give each janitor a sh*tty pink slip,

Dozens of residents, they were all fired,

The Board didn't blink, for they were all tired,

Of hearing everyone whine and complain,

After all, the teachers were wholly to blame,

Protecting their neighbors, it's not the Board's job,

Only protecting their interests and the District's blob,

But, what did Delaney have to gain from the ruse?,

He had no kids whose teachers he could choose,

Delaney's plan finally came to the fore,

When Dick hired his friend, Tyler Blackmore,

Dozens of residents out of stable work,

While Blackmore got 150k plus perks,

Then, came the Board's unbelievable contention,

That Dick deserved a contract extension,

"We need him to stay!" the Board members all cried,

Only thinking of themselves, it's now clear they all lied,

Dr. Dick took more money and Warren moved away,

But Warren still swore that Dick would stay,

Now, Dick's on to Edison with his bags packed of course,

And Warren's in Brooklyn after getting a divorce,

And we're all sitting here strapped for cash,

Praying the Board doesn't do anything rash,

Because one more mistake by this goddamn Board,

Is more than Aberdeeners can now afford,

All we can do is learn from the past,

And put all the Board members out on their ass,

It might take a prayer answered in heaven,

Or just us voting in 2011...

By giving Joey's Republican friends an illicit donation

People usually don't report illicit donations on their elect forms. It is usually cash in a small white envelope that is spent on things that have no receipts like postcards and postage.
