Found Money

After successfully passing its first tax increase in a decade, the Matawan-Aberdeen School District was delighted to learn it was the proud recipient of an additional $584,217 in state aid.

The district’s senior administrators quickly huddled to determine how to best spend the money. After all, the thinking goes, why should the money go to waste as tax relief during a labor and housing crisis when the school district could put it to good use.

And what was their master plan? Buying books. Lots and lots of books. Why? Because studies show that the mere presence of books in a room magically improves literacy rates among youngsters.

How does that work? I’m glad you asked. You see, according to this theory, kids are tired of watching TV, playing video games, chatting online or texting friends, and surfing the web. No, what children really want to do is curl up in bed with a good read. But they can’t because the school library doesn’t have any good books and Mommy and Daddy won’t take them to the public library. So, against their better judgment, kids have no alternative to social networking and mind numbing entertainment.

According to this theory, given the choice between Grand Theft Auto and Lord of the Flies, children will naturally be drawn to the latter.

Moreover, this investment will be a one-shot deal without any future maintenance costs. These heavily used books will forever remain in pristine condition, they’ll never get lost or lose their popularity, the teachers will maintain impeccable records, and the district will never need to purchase new books since all the great ones have already been written.

This program is critical to the district’s mission of educating our students. It’s so important, that only a few programs rank higher in priority, such as inflating our bloated staff.

If we outsourced the transportation department and sold our buses, we’d save $650,000 the first year and $250,000 a year after that. But the district’s commitment to their bus drivers is far more important than children’s literacy or tax relief. There’s the quarter-million plus spent a year on Reading Recovery, a program even the US Deptartment of Education has determined harmful to students, that’s also more important than literacy and tax relief. Or the $60,000 spent a year to keep teacher aides on state pension rolls. Or $600,000 on athletics, $300,000 on school clubs, and $300,000 on school lunch aides,

Yup, literacy is the most important thing excluding all of the above.

And if we really want kids to read, we need books. The old fashioned kind. You know, the ones made of paper that sometimes get bent or torn or lost. That’s real reading. Not these new-fangled Kindles. We can’t allow our children to read Shakespeare for free on a Kindle when we can break their backs with 20-pound backpacks. After all, we don’t want our kids becoming sissies.

However, in the event the school board chooses to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars into a literacy program, may I suggest an alternative?

Let’s require every 3rd – 12th grade student to own a Kindle and have a library card. The school will subsidize the cost so that the student will only need to pay $50. (Kids getting free meals would get additional discounts but never free. Families need to invest in literacy as well.) Then coordinate with the local library to provide e-books for downloading over the internet. Most of the classics are free. For modern books, the library could set aside $50,000 its first year and then $5,000 each succeeding year to build an enormous online library with no need to expand shelf space or personnel. (Seeing as how the library can afford to give the Matawan and Aberdeen municipalities about $375,000 a year, it can certainly afford the small sums to build an online library.)

Such a program would cost the district about $150,000 to launch and $15,000 -20,000 a year to maintain. (Costs should drop as the Kindle price drops.) The library would once again be part of communal life and have an extraordinarily expansive collection, particularly if this program could be coordinated through all the Monmouth County libraries.

At best, our kids will be reading. At worst, we’ll have saved a couple hundred thousand dollars from a misguided program and our kids will have Kindles. Or we could just let the taxpayers keep their money. >>> Read more!

Maybe they should use the money for all the new do nothing employees, counselors and administrators.

Talk about not learning the basics.

Administrations are incompetent when it comes to prioritization and spending money wisely. Our tax money of course.

Vic and Norm, hope you evacuated the building quick enough! Or maybe the gas leak was from some sleeping ex-councilman hack over there at the DMV...

Football you bet said...

I have to agree they have hired a lot of new staff at a time when people are struggling just to keep their homes. But fear not Matawan and Aberdeen there will be football. Football you bet while the worlds third worlds are kicking our asses in educational test scores. But that pigskin that gets kicked for twelve weeks is 'mucho importante'. Right Gorilla Joe?

Let Kauff run the schools then with his percentages from his corrupt and incompetent lawyers, prosecutor and judges payoffs, and all the other usual democratic trickery Kauff might finally have enough to retire and leave us alone. Broke but left alone. Right Norm?

maybe spend the money on the administrators to go to business and economics classes where they will learn how not to piss away money that isn't theirs.

Looks like John Gartley is zeroing in on Kauff. Good!

Books! Such waste! Emblematic of everything that is wrong with this country. If we work really really hard and count all the beans, think of how many more costly products and employees we can eliminate! Oh, the money we could save the taxpayers! That's why Romney would be such an excellent choice for President. He's the master of levereged buy outs, you know...buy em up and lay em off! Downsize and shrink! 1 bean, 2 beans, 3 beans....they add up! The bottom line rules.

NOT!

Why does one man have all the power? said...

Just as long as the authorities are zero-ing in on Normie. I pray every night that he gets caught. Let freedom ring throughout Aberdeen on that day. How can one man control so many? Sadly many said the same thing about Adolf Hitler, Idi Amin Dada, Fidel Castro, Po Pott, Stalin and many other dictators throughout history. While Aberdeen is not the size of Germany or Russia it is solely dictatorially controlled. Never let anyone tell you that Normie does not run Aberdeen. It is the truth, the whole truth and sadly nothing but the truth.

Zeroing in is what we need. Just one insider to set in motion the relief so longed for by taxpayers, developers and us business owners in town. I had hoped the developers putting up the big building on 34 would tell on Kauff and his shakedown tactics. Sadly these big companies know they have to pay the piper or in this case the Kauff. Right Coach Fred? Repent Coach Fred you can be saved.

How many parents can afford to buy a kindle for each child, especially these days? Whoops! Sorry, Mom, the dog ate my Kindle...Kindle? What Kindle? Oh yeah, I forgot where I left it, maybe the school bus on Friday, I don't know. Splash! Milk all over the kindle. Crash. Yikes! Its on the floor, for heaven's sake, don't step on it. Crack.

If you think $50 is a lot for a Kindle, then you don't realize how much the district is spending on textbooks.

Or maybe you just think the school district should be paying for everything, like $130,000 a year for kids to learn ceramics.

Wait I got it.

I know what we can do with the money.

We can hire back the privatized janitors.

Remember when they were privatized and the soon to be laid off school district janitors and other staff their union representatives screamed and whined that all of our children would be in danger from pedophiles and thatall the schools would be filthy.

So let us just hire back all the alarmist liars.

No incidents, no pedophiles and schools are clean.

Keep cashing your Obama checks liars.

Don't worry Obama will fix everything???? Freaking Vinci has more experience in government than Obama has. He arrives in New Jersey tomorrow to tell us all we have storm damage and the government will pay everybody over and over again for weather related damage. The everybody I speak of are the people who the government should not have let them build houses where they are flooded so often. Don't worry though the glorified Chicago area community activist with 146 days in the senate who I still can't believe I have to say is the president of the United States of America. Obama will fix everything? No he won't. Enjoy your one swing at the bat president Obama there will not be a second inning. Start writing your memoir as you will not be elected again. I suggest the title " How I f'd up the whole United States of America in just two years. I know its the fault of George Bush #2. That is getting really old all you Obama miscreants. I just really hope I get some Obama stimulus money this time. I'm tired of seeing the same people get taken care of year after year and generation after generation while so many hard working Americans struggle to survive. The middle class has had enough. We are giving America away and our president is the enabler. Him and his liberal scum and fellow demoscum.

F'N REMARKABLE HOW ONE LONE ANONYMOUS A HOLE FORGETS ALL THE OTHER SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS WHO SERVED BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER ALONG SIDE JERRY DONAHUE. FROM THIS ONE A HOLE NO ONE ELSE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE RUNNING OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT. JERRY D. IS ONE VOTE YOU IDIOT. MAYBE THE FACT THAT JERRY D. FOUND THAT QUINN AND BAR-ZA ALLOWED HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN VERY RECENTLY INSTALLED LIGHTING TO BE RIPPED OUT OF THE HIGH SCHOOL TO FACILITATE LIGHTING UNDER THE $38M SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION FIASCO THAT OCCURRED HERE AND ALL ACROSS THE STATE. BUT ACCORDING TO THIS ONE A HOLE JERRY D IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL. THAT IS JUST CRAP. WHY DON'T THE A HOLE RUN FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD RATHER THAN FIXATING ON ONE MAN WHO HAS GIVEN YEARS TO THE SCHOOL SYSTEM AND HAS ADMITTED SOME MISSTEPS. TO DRONE ON ABOUT HIS WIFE GETTING A JOB WITH BENEFITS TRY THIS ONE ON FOR SIZE. SHE WAS ALREADY WORKING IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR YEARS WHEN THE POSITION BECAME AVAILABLE. SHOULD THE SCHOOL DISTRICT HAVE IGNORED PERSONNEL ALREADY WORKING IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT YOU GENIUS?
TELL MOMMY ITS YOUR BED TIME, HAVE YOUR WARM MILK AND COOKIES AND SUCK YOUR THUMB UNTIL YOU FALL ASLEEP COUNTING JERRY DONAHUE'S IN YOUR SLEEP. YOU A-HOLE.

Gerry Donohue attacker drones on said...

Thats a good point. Gerry has admitted he is not perfect and that some votes did not work out like Bruce Quinn among some others but Gerry votes with his heart and always for the kids. Such votes are not like the Barbato and Zavorskas types.

To attack one man so insanely leaves many more questions of the probably unbalanced nameless and faceless attacker. He must be a saint of a man who has never made a mistake in his whole opinionated life. As Julie Andrews sang in a musical "perfect in every way". I think it is more like "he is singularly opinionated in every way". He drones on and on and on about two specific items regarding his wife working for the district and a vote concerning salary increases for the school leadership. The fact that the leadership, all be it gone now did the job and made the decisions a leader is supposed to make does not factor into the equation says much perhaps all many clear thinking people need to know about the faceless attacker.

The anonymous attacker fails to mention the mess that was Superintendent Quinn and others whose complicit, collective, controlled and far more costly decisions that hurt our school district never seems to make it into his ranting and raving.

I must admit the milk and cookies and mommies post was very funny. Maybe the Donohue attacker should look at the Kauff Klan to see what inept, controlled and costly decisions cost the taxpaying community in the face of a no less corruptly controlled leadership. That situation is truly a crime.

Well, well, looks like somebody struck a nerve! Hey, is that the CAPS guy and Ms DONOHUE sticking up for GERRY! That CAPS guy is a real moron, huh? I'll bet he's not only a republican but he lives under a rock. Probably writes in CAPS to make up for a little shortage somewhere else if catch my drift.
Well, CAPS guy, I just didn't want Joey's readers to forget that DONOHUE gave a 9 per cent raise to an administrator in the district while they were laying off personnel. That's all. The fact that his wife received a permanent postion in the district (with benefits) right after that vote would seem to indicate that possibly a deal was made. I mean, so what she worked for the district "part time". How many times has someone more deserving been passed up regardless of their status in the district? It looks fishy, wouldn't you say? Now, as far as DONOHUE and QUINN well, they're all part of the same administration/board therefore he's part of the mis-spent funds too. Yes, DONOHUE, it happened on your watch. You are also responsible. Oh, and the fact that your 9 per center is not here anymore doesn't wash. You still voted for it and you benefitted from it.
So, DONOHUE, you can hide behind QUINN and past administrations but you were there. I remember another time when those responsible said "what could I do, I was only one man?" Yeah, great defense!
Gotta go - I have to have my cookies and milk, now!

Think about it Aberdeen said...

Investigation of Kauff? I hope it is true and that he FINALLY gets what he deserves. I am so tired of people saying what he does is just politics as usual in New Jersey. Th money he steals coupled with the dictatorial control of our supposed elected leadership is not politics as usual. It is illegal, immoral, unethical, corrupt and most importantly it is destroying what was a fine community. Some say it would be the same under the republicans. I think that is just more of the same but what the taxpayers have seen lately with our political leaders in Trenton turning against the unions that they manipulated and used like puppets to maintain their feathered nests just to stay in office amongst their do nothing or do just enough colleagues. We should turn them all out from Washington D.C. to our town hall. I will vote for anyone not associated, controlled or corrupted by Kauff. It truly is the lesser of two evils even if it only lasts on day. One day away from the control of Kauff would be worth it. I am sure the droning of Kauff having nothing to do in town will be suggested. Ask any town employee who runs Aberdeen and you will know the truth of the corruption in Aberdeen that is Kauff and his soldiers who follow him blindly, delay and without hearing the cries of an oppressed community tired of Kauff and politics as usual. Kauff out in 2011 to save Aberdeen. Think about it Aberdeen. Save Aberdeen!

BY THE WAY I SCANNED THE AGENDA AT WORK TODAY AND THE KAUFF COUNCIL WILL BE DISCUSSING THE $500,000.00 REFUND THEY HAVE TO GIVE AN APARTMENT COMPLEX IN TOWN.

MAYBE THEY COULD GET A LOAN FROM THE COPS THEY GAVE TOO MUCH MONEY OVER THE PAST TEN YEARS.

34 COPS MAKE A TOTAL OF OVER $3,750,000.00.

AND WE THINK KAUFF STEALS A BIG CHUNK.

I thought it was around 300k that was supposed to be given back. So many problems with the Kauffcouncil and the town is certainly bleeding too. How much money has the town given back like this and to whom. You can bet the town employees will be on the chopping block again next year after the next corrupt Kauffelection. Kauff will have nothing to lose to let them go to protect his C.M.E. and his illegal percentages for no services rendered of course. It seems it is good to be Norman Kauff when you can use Aberdeen as your own little bank.

Road program $$$$$$ said...

More money for CME and Norman Kauff was announced today in the paper under the guise of a road improvement. It seems that a grant has been given to Aberdeen to repave South Atlantic Avenue from Hwy. 34 to near Church Street.

The most telling thing in the story is where a man named Bob Brady, who seems to have taken over for Mr. Lauro, says the following "we hope the grant is enough to cover the whole project".

Here is a hint Mr. Brady free of charge from a taxpayer who knows how the system really works.

Take Norman Kauff and his equally corrupt CME engineering out of the costs, or better yet as is said and true their inflated costs and you could pave a whole lot more on every road project you want to do in town forever. In the last ten plus years you probably could have paved every street in town if Kauff and CME kept their greedy corrupt hands out of the road projects.

Don't give me that bullshit either that the town needs CME. The town needs an engineer and many other towns both larger and smaller than ours have gone to hiring their own engineers to keep the corruption and political hanky panky at bey. Stop the lies to cover for Norman Kauff illegally financing his Democratic party in Aberdeen Mr. Brady if you truly want to serve the public! Try stopping the unchecked bogus fees and fraudulent inspections by CME that garners a big chunk of the $340,000.00 from this gran you announced today! Stop the extra charges that CME gets approved without any real and substantive. Such road programs illegally feed the Democratic coffers and sustain the Kauff corruption. No one really checks the CME bills and you know it. Complete and total reviews should be done and not by "controlled by Kauff " officials and you might stand a chance of getting real cost effective work done for our tax money, much less try being respected once again as the overseers of our tax monies for which you are paid with our tax dollars.

This community has grown very tired of Kauff stacking his zoning and planning boards and his town council with his cronies, puppets and political hacks to rob such projects and many others without any real questioning or anything close to an official financial review.

Finally I say if anyone wants to really see the epitome of one man completely ignoring the needs and wants of the American people, sit down tonight and just watch Obama lie to the American pubic about his "vision for America". "His vision is killing America" very similarly to the corruption and illegal control of Aberdeen by Kauff. Kauff is similarly killing Aberdeen!

Train time got to go.
