A Sample Exam for High School Seniors

One of my perennial complaints against the school board is that the board has never established educational standards for the students, instead relinquishing that role to the state and the school administration. The result has been a predictable diminished level of expectations and a graduating class largely unprepared to pursue higher education or the most promising labor fields.

I have long argued the board must set its own standards and hold the administration accountable for meeting those standards. Furthermore, everyone, from the teachers, to the parents, to the students, should know exactly what those standards are. That means providing exhaustive study guides from which all exam questions are drawn so that there's no doubt of nor divergence from those standards.

Below is a list of sample questions that I would expect every student to know prior to graduation and, contrary to the state's standards, anything below 70% is a failing grade.

I doubt a majority of our high school seniors could properly answer most of the below questions but the question for the community is this - After spending 13 years and $200,000 per child, which of the below questions is outside what we should expect a graduating senior to know?

English

  1. Romeo and Juliet, Catcher in the Rye, and Huckleberry Finn are among the most revered and reviled works of literature in our nation's public schools. Choose one of the above works and write a 400-500 word persuasive essay arguing why it should be included in the school curriculum. Be sure to include quotations from the story and discuss the plot and central characters.
Math
  1. Prove 4X^2 - 16XY + 16Y^2 + 2 is always greater than zero
  2. Provide the mathematical equation for a circle whose center is (5,5) and radius is 5.
  3. A mutual fund advertises “An average 8% annual return over the past five years”. If the fund returned 8% each year, how much would $10,000 have earned over the five years?
  4. The actual track record of the fund for each of the five years was 15%, 25%, 10%, -40%, and 30%. Plus the fund has an annual 2% management fee. How much would a $10,000 investment have returned over the past five years?
  5. 5 years ago, a bank offered a 5-year CD with a 2.2% annual interest rate. Which would have been the better investment?
Science
  1. What is the chemical equation for photosynthesis?
  2. A police car's siren operates at 300hz. The patrol car is traveling at 95 mph to catch a car traveling 80 mph. What is the siren frequency the pursued driver would actually hear?
  3. What is positive feedback? Where is it found in nature? Why is it rare? Why is it central to man-made global warming theory?
American History
  1. Why was George Washington unanimously elected to be the nation's first president? Discuss his personal qualifications, the political considerations, and both the needs and fears of a strong presidency.
  2. Per capita, the Civil War was our nation's bloodiest. Why was it so important to Abraham Lincoln to preserve the union?
  3. Of America's 44 presidents, a few are noted as having significantly transformed the role of the presidency. Pick a president who significantly transformed the presidency and discuss how he changed the office.
Government
  1. What is a government of enumerated powers? Name three things, excluding civil violations, that the federal government cannot do.
  2. What is the constitutional question regarding the individual mandate in the recent healthcare reform legislation?
  3. The 14th amendment states, “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States”. When adopted, did the 14th Amendment protect against sex discrimination? Does it now? Discuss.
Economics
  1. What is the Laffer Curve? Why is it a source of disagreement in Congressional Budget Office projections?
  2. The Federal Reserve is trying to stimulate the economy and prevent deflation by lowering interest rates and increasing the money supply. How would that stimulate the economy? What is the fear of deflation?
  3. Critics have complained the Federal Reserve's actions will lead to inflation. How might that happen and why is it a concern?
World History
  1. How is Western Civilization different from other civilizations? Compare and contrast to at least one other civilization.
  2. Discuss the differences between the American Revolution and the French Revolution, including what sparked the revolutions, what were the underlying philosophies, and how they were effectuated.
  3. On December 7th, 1941, a “Day of Infamy”, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Roosevelt responded by sending most of the armed forces to fight Germany. Why?
Foreign Language
  1. Translate Goldilocks and the Three Bears into a foreign language.
Ethics
  1. Most of the families in a small town earn their livelihoods at a local profitable factory. One day, the owner, a local businessman, decides to close the factory and move operations oversees where labor is cheaper. Would it be ethical for the townspeople to levy a “millionaire's tax”, which would only impact the businessman, to support the newly unemployed? Discuss.
  2. A hospital's nurses feel they are not being fairly compensated and that management is not negotiating with them in good faith. Would it be ethical for them to strike? Discuss.

Joey, that's a wonderful plan! You should call the schools chancellor, and have it implemented. They will probably only try it in one of the Boroughs at first. Then, once it's proven succesful, they will surely implement it citywide.

I agree that this board, or any other for that matter, has ever established educational standards for the students. You say you argued for these standards, but did not have any success. Who was standing in your way? Was it other board memebers? Was it administration? Why didn't it happen? Please be specific.

I first raised the issue in 2009.

I first raised the issue on the school board in May, 2010.

"Mr. Warren would like to have another brainstorming session for developing. District goals. One of those goals should be that students have the skills, knowledge and experience to be successful when they leave the District."

As for why it never happened, without revisiting that time period, suffice to say I didn't have the opportunity to force it through.

Hard to worry about testing in a school where the criminals are running the place, where kids have no respect and administration has no control over the student body. Where kids who hit teachers and push principals are allowed back to school.
Walk through the halls during the day, it's starting to look like Compton. Why don't we worry about the huge decline in behavior and behavioral standards first?

One little word is missing from our educational system in regards to parents, students, staff and administrators. The word is accountability. Accountability with all involved in the educational processes is missing and is the main problem. The reasons accountability is missing from our society is the root cause of most problems in education and society on the whole.

This raises the bigger question of, is this district failing our students. The sad part is a very large percentage of our high school students would not pass this test, yet it seems reasonable that they should. You were on the board of ed and could not even get a discusson going on making changes. The average parent wouldn't even know how to start making drastic changes to a system that thinks its doing a great job. Its hard to understand the reason for this post, it only points out how the system is failing us and no solution is in sight.

O'Malley was here about a month short of three years. He was the educational leader. He was legally the only person who could make recommendations to the board for them to vote on. He was hired to run the school district. Did you present your ideas to him?

1. You put forth this test? Who makes you the end all- be all of what our kids should know? This test is pure speculation and so are your SUPPOSED RESULTS that you think might happen. GIve me a break.

And it doesnt even make sense - 2 women talked about bathroom time taking away from instruction and the opinion lady talks about soap dispensers-

you cant pee in a soap dispenser.

But our BOE prez likes her becuase she frequently tells him how great he is. Then talks about an unprofessional teacher - you know whats unprofessional ? using real names as she has done in the past or making accusations against people who cannot defend themselves in a public forum (and you wonder why those teachers need tenure when it comes to politics like this)- so much that she is lucky she wasnt sued for slander.

Those are the real problems.... Good luck Mr. Healy. I am glad I moved out of here years ago after living here for 30 years. I still care for this district for genuine reasons. I'm not even gone six months and already I'm being accused of not "standing my ground". Check the minutes, speak to any of the board leaders, this was a topic I brought up frequently but I ran out of time. It had to be done during the summer, I wasn't available, and it never happened. The prior summer was used for goal settings.

Right now, I'm doing what I can to push the issue forward. That's all I can do. And it's a lot more than most.

Hopefully, the board will consider this for the upcoming summer session.

The "board" never took you seriously and it is amazing that you think you mattered to them and their agenda. Remember, this is Chuckies district. You had three main objectives or goals that you only got lip service on. 1) New mission statement. Got one, but not yours. 2)Online degrees from certain schools (it is still going on). 3) Establish educational standards like described in your post (didn't happen when you were there and won't happen when you are gone). If you wanted to get something done, you should have taken up a special ed issue.

I could give you a list of changes I made but to work from yours -

1)Got a new mission statement which actually requires the students learn something

2)Online degrees are a contractual matter. Now, for the first time, they'll actually be discussed during negotiations. Secondly, teachers are now required to provide evidence they actually earned their online degrees.

3)You hear about the writing curricula? That was my push. We also now have an objective standards to measure advancement. I also helped block some "college accredited" classes that I believed were bogus.

Obviously, you've never worked in a group environment to believe you can simply dictate what everyone else does. Considering the time I had, I'm proud of what I achieved.

I confess that I usually write nasty posts to you on here because I disagree with nearly all of your viewpoints. At this point, I'm sorry. I just feel bad for you.

You've spent the morning defending three minor reforms you enacted after you won an unopposed election for a small town school board in a place you moved away from. You used to infuriate me when you were on that board, but now I find this whole thing increasingly absurd and demoralizingly sad.

I'm not saying you shouldn't continue to run this blog. Clearly, you have readers, including me. But, please do find something to do with yourself before you slip further into delusional nostalgia. Take your kids to the park or something and post here during election time or only once in a while.

I love the creativity in the posts. Ralph and the assorted Kauff faithful try really hard to embarrass those who shine the light on their corruption. But year after year, post after post they are out done. They fail to recognize or more likely are embarrassed that they are truly being outclassed, out mocked and outrightly out done by the posts like the one that mentions Kauff walking Coren on a short leash. It was short, sweet and biting.

That of course is much like the daily activities of our former town manager where his time is short until he gets released, sweet since Coren is probably acting like a sweet inmate to stay alive and biting which is what he must do to his pillow as he is abused by his jail friends.

Sorry I could not keep myself from joining in on the Kauff based abuse. I myself wonder how much more Kauff and his supporters can really stand. Everything they do gets out. Everything they fail to do gets out. The embarrassment of having to replace another manager speaks volumes as people say. They want us to believe the recently departed manager really was capable as yet they let him go. They let him go and that was all we needed to know despite the glowing tributes and thank you lies printed in the newspapers. If he was so good give him the money to stay. The town leadership have to blame themselves and the big mouths in their midst for allowing their inactions and miscues to become public.

My wife and I are only a year from retirement and we will flee Aberdeen and the obvious Norman Kauff control.

One final note to Mr. Warren. Take great pride in the fact that you are chastised and called out by the Kauff people and the educationally ignorant and preservative types. I and many others enjoy the back and forth at the expense of the morally corrupt who merely hate you because you publicize through this blog their professional, elected or managerial inadequacies.

We look forward to much more from you the next year. Thank you once again for keeping the selfish among us out for public exposure and opinion.

Have prior incidents, complaints and problems generated or surrounding Chief Auriemma ever been properly catalogued, investigated or been reported the commissioners on the supposed prior occasions?

The recently reported incidents at recent fire scenes that were reported and claimed that Chief Auriemma acted, directed or possibly endangered himself, fellow firefighters and perhaps private properties?

Is there an official report available to taxpayers on the official actions, findings or results?

Is there an official hearing of all of the above that the public or newspapers could attend?

Is this a closed society unto itself?

This is in fact a taxpayer funded building that for the most part operates with taxpayer dollars. I think we taxpayers deserve answers to the above inquiries to ensure that our firefighters are properly considered, instructed, safeguarded and most importantly when they do complain that they are not ignored by those officials, commissioners and others that are paid and sworn to act officially and in the best interest of the entire volunteer organization that we fund.

Will one commissioner reply to this inquiry. We are told the firehouse has offices, secretaries, computers and other technology and that the staff and Chief Auriemma it is said follow this blog site very closely. Soat the end I ask that just one named official, commissioner or volunteer properly respond to the above questions from this taxpayer.

Taxpayers, firefighters and more are owed an official explanation to the trouble in this firehouse and with its leadership.

I for one can only imagine what working as a volunteer in such a place would be like. The words effective and responsible leadership is certainly not a description of what is going on at the corner fire house. I find it very troubling as well as a classic good o'l boys situation that has apparently caused major rifts in an organization that is based on volunteers who if too often abused can walk away and that does not serve the community well. I have major problems with the presented facts that the commissioners may have failed these volunteers, the community and finally at a too often significant financial taxpayer expense. My wife and I will be voting any presently serving officers out of office since it is obvious that major failures have been allowed to disrupt this organization. I am very disappointed in this organization that we have thought of may not be what we thought all of these years. I will return their annual fund drive until this entire situation is fully disclosed and properly handled. To date I think this one man and his arrogance has improperly been allowed to destroy this organization. It is truly a shame.

Hey PW's, GFY. The Cliffwood Beach section had snow piled on the streets and intersections from the first snowfall. Gulden Street and areas of the Concourse looked like Alaska. The corners had snow so high you couldn't see down the streets. Don't gimme that crap! I'll bet the Stathmore section was nice and clean. I'll bet Nsection Joes street was clean. It was not only CB, the town did a lousy job plowing in Strathmore as well. Sure there was a tremendous amount of snow, but that doesn't mean the plows should pile the mounds up 6 -10 feet and high at every intersection and corner. Of course the workers needed time to get the job done, but they never came back after the initial plowing to remove the mounds at any of the intersection. There were many days between storms where they could have picked up and loaded these snow mounds into dump trucks.

And YES, there were accidents and injuries, some critical. Look at any of the school bus stops, the kids, young kids are still standing out in the middle of the streets waiting for the bus, because the corners are still piled with snow.

But let's keep whining about not thanking people for doing the job they get PAID to do. BTW, I have no problem thanking workers for doing an excellent job, but this was far from excellent.

I like you questions Aberdeener, but sadly, you'd be hard press to find any of the students in this district, including my own that are prepared to answer these questions or even discuss to any extent these topics. They are simply not taught this material. That is how weak the curriculum still is. Sadly many kids are still struggling with the basics.

Furthermore, there are constant fights at the high school, and no one wants to address any of the basic requirements that would be necessary in order to allow any type of learning to take place.

I'm just praying the new superintendent we hire will be experienced and able to handle these problems that no one wants to address. And many like to pretend don't exist

I apologize for the couple of nameless and faceless people who cannot put their name on their words. I apologize to those of you who may be offended by their conduct. I would sincerely hope that the subjects could be more open for discussions rather than what has been the last few postings above from those who amuse themselves at my expense without real substantive proof.

For the record I did write a letter complimenting the public workers, emergency service workers and others who did a great job in the difficult storms we have endured this winter.

To my veiled attackers the invitation is open for any of the posters above to call me and ask any question they wish of me at anytime. Unlike their childish self amusing dribble I will answer any of their questions honestly. Unlike these two or three I put my name out there as they hide. I find their attempts at embarrassing me laughable. I am already chuckling at what not doubt will be their similarly lame attempts after this post is listed.

I take the time to concentrate on issues relating to the schools in this town. I will honestly admit that I wasted a great amount of time years ago attending countless council meetings although I did seek better representation, a cleaner community and adequate staffing and coverage for our community from their police force. I am proud of the effort, trouble and grief I gave the leadership at that time. The school board controls the far greater tax monies and that needs all of our attention. That is where I concentrate my time and efforts now.

Once again I apologize to the other people on the site for the amateurish distraction above and that will follow this post.

As has been said before to those who need to amuse themselves while seeking some form of self congratulation, so attack away.

One thing I would ask. After you are finished amusing yourself at my expense try and give some time and effort to improve the community.

This district is a mess and all his does is continue to live in the past. His "endorsement" of the new superintendent is based on what? His conversations with Donaghue, who he constantly defends, and has done more harm to this district than any other person, while gaining personally and being unethical. Just because he puts his name to something doesn't make it gospel, just his slanted point of view. Maybe, some of the attacks are justified, so stop apologizing for others who don't see things the same way and may be more involved in really trying to improve what is going on in our broken system.

To me, the McAleers of the world are a big part of what’s wrong with not just our school district, but organizations all over. Mr. McAleer feels he represents the people of Matawan-Aberdeen, and he does. He represents the faction consisting of individuals who contribute nothing but always fall back on their inalienable right to complain. I don’t see these types volunteering to coach youth athletics, lead Scouts, or help out with PTO functions, but they remain ever ready to point out the imperfections of those who do. I didn’t see you at the PTO bake sale, Joe.

Mr. McAleer, in your guest column you claim to have "the greatest respect for the PTO organization and those who give tirelessly in the interest of the children/students, and yet you accuse these organizations of spending funds on school board elections and of hoarding money, holding it back from "the children who very often raise the money." Quite oxymoronic, with the emphasis on the latter.

But having two distinctly different views on an issue seems to be your trademark — besides your PTO comments:

First, you complain about your taxes increasing and you refuse to support your school district’s budget, and then jump fence and, in print and on the radio, support the Middletown teachers for striking over salary and benefits. Could this be because your wife is a Middletown teacher? It sounds like you sold out on your principles for 13 pieces of silver. I personally support teachers all over. They deserve their salaries, and if my taxes increase to give them what they deserve, I will pay it gladly.

Next, you admonish the school board, calling it "a school board divided amongst itself," and yet again you back up your wife’s decision to cross a picket line. An act like this truly serves to divide a union against itself.

Third, you call for "tried and true solutions" to our problems such as "redistricting, grade specific schools, and split sessions." You admit they come with "minor inconveniences." I’m taking bets on who will be the first to complain if his child is inconvenienced.

Through all of this, it seems that it comes down to money where you are concerned. Well, if that’s the case, you should sell your house and move. Real estate values are high in Aberdeen right now. Why pay $6,000 in taxes and send your child to a public school you are not satisfied with? I mean, if the milk in your refrigerator is sour, what do you do? Give it to your child anyway and then write an acidic letter about the cow?

When I first read your guest column in the Independent, it bothered me. What I read was a verbal attack on volunteers who give their time only to be chastised by misinformed individuals. I felt like — in the writer’s vernacular — tearing you a new inkwell. Hey, I agree that just because they don’t get paid doesn’t mean they don’t have an obligation to us. But don’t make their jobs harder by writing a column laced with inconsistencies, spiced up with innuendo, flavored with rumors and topped off with misconstrued facts. Hey that sounds like a Big Mac — or maybe a Whopper.

I can’t blame you for your views, Joe — write on. Maybe someone should tell you that the ’60s are over. You can still shout "ban the bomb" and "burn your bra," but stay away from "don’t trust anyone over 30" when you’re there yourself. I can’t blame you, Joe, but I am a little disappointed with the Independent. They allow you to write a column berating our school board, while on the same page the Independent’s own "our view" states "this has been a particularly difficult year for school boards and administrators to prepare next year’s budget." Fine, I applaud your fairness in giving Joe his say, but I do believe you have an obligation to check out his facts, especially when they could be damaging to the reputations of others.

OK, please explain...if a child isn't in school how can he perform?Just give him the exam and if he passes we can graduate him? Let him come in once a week and take a test and if he passes, great?

We do have an attendance policy, but at this point it is a complete joke and my guess would be at least 5-10% of the kids at the HS would be repeating a year if it was followed. However since we dont follow it why not just get rid of it? While we are at it we should get rid of the late policy as well, that is actually a bigger joke.

The Stoney group sue every town without hesitation. They are what the legal profession call gadflies. They sue towns and make a living doing it. Most of the time it takes years and a whole lot of money. If Joe MCaleer did anything wrong that resulted in a lawsuit why would the town not have fired him right away. Answer that question you will find the Stoney's enjoy suing towns. Joe MCaleer is the local fixation probably of a few guilty or embarrassed by Joe before are lashing out. The town would have fired him right away and paid off the Stoney's. I don't think it is true. I have followed Joe in the paper and he has a lot of opinions and none of them I feel were selfish. Looks like the Stoney's daughter posted at 3:00 and 3:03 yesterday. I thought she moved away with mommy and daddy to Ohio? Guess not? It had to be the same person due to the time frame. If it looks like those posts,the 3:03 posting includes the same old rehash of PTO and scouting stuff we saw a while ago. I think it can only be a Stoney. The 3:00 post was probably off of some old court thing. The 3:03 post was just more of the typical anonymous babble against the one guy who identifies himself. Do you have any knowledge from when you were on the school board if any discussion was given as to why our district school schedules, are between 30minutes (@MAMS) and 45 minutes (@ HS) less than the NJ state average for educational instruction time. It seems reasonable to me that if we want to improve our students' education, they need the proper amount of time receiving educational instruction. Many might say what good is another 5-7 minutes per period, to which I say, that allows for time to get organized, or extra time for teachers to explain and reinforce more difficult material to the students.

The middle school had moved to a block schedule to increase class time. I don't know what effect it had. Aside from that, the school day is contractually limited by contract with the teachers union.

Considering we've now had two (albeit anonymous) posters defending parents' non-involvement with their children's education as if it were a law of nature, I think the greater problem is that children don't spend enough time learning at home with their parents.

Thats great the teachers not only work for part of the year and get full time pay but they also have a shorter day then a normal school district in NJ. Because its in the contract? What the hell is that. Someone needs to act ASAP and shut this shit down. Give the money back to the towns. This all about the children stuff is getting out of hand. How much does it cost?

Did not the Kauffcil controlled zoning board just deny signs for two local businesses, Livottis and the Sports Zone? This crap about the council being friendly to business is bullshit. Hey but it is no problem to get a variance to divide a postage stamp size piece of land to build another house as long as a campaign contributor may possibly get the work or if the project will be "managed" by CME.
