Revenge of the Do-Nothings

"When you come to a fork in the road, take it." - Yogi Berra

Based upon comments to the blog, it appears the Monday quarterbacking armchair analysts are seizing Dr. O’Malley’s and my departures as an opportunity to repudiate everything the Matawan-Aberdeen district has accomplished under his leadership. This party of malcontents never has anything constructive to offer but their baseless criticisms, which are immune to logic and fact.

For example, when the school district was facing a $7 million budget shortfall and the Matawan-Aberdeen community hadn’t supported a tax increase since 2001, the do-nothings were opposing steep staff reductions. Did they offer any alternative to close the budget gap? No. To this day, they’re happy to criticize the school board for outsourcing the custodians while ignoring the million dollars it would have cost each year to retain the custodians.

Another example is O’Malley’s raise. In 2008, O’Malley negotiated a reasonable compensation package in exchange for the expectation of salary increases once he proved himself. In his first year, O’Malley introduced numerous educational initiatives, made several personnel changes, and produced a budget that actually reduced year-over-year spending and didn’t raise taxes. He asked for a $9,000 raise and got it.

People were in an uproar. How could the school board pay a person more than contractually required? How could we reward someone for just one year’s performance? (To be fair, nobody was so upset as to actually attend the school board meeting, just upset enough to complain on this blog.)

Well, the following year, O’Malley did more of the same and didn’t get a raise beyond his contract guarantee. Every taxpayer and district parent can see the changes O’Malley has wrought, from special education to legal fees, to writing curriculums, to the academies, to testing and data analysis, to accelerated math curricula, to a renewed focus on college preparation, to safer schools, to restrained tax increases, and so on.

Nobody argues that O’Malley would have done more without the raise and we’ll never know if he would have done less. All we do know is that the board was absolutely correct in assuming O’Malley was a flight risk; Edison, New Jersey’s 5th largest school district, recruited O’Malley with a $25,000 salary increase.

Once again, what would the malcontents have done to retain and incentivize exceptional talent? Absolutely nothing.

Of course, now the malcontents want to argue that the raises were a waste of money because O’Malley is leaving anyways. Nonsense. That’s like saying you should only wear seatbelts prior to certain types of accidents, as if such things could be predicted. The school board did its best, within reason, to encourage O’Malley to do the best job he could and to remain within the district. That’s all the school board could do and it was right to do so.

People complained that eliminating the Director of Security position would endanger our children (the same complaint made when the district outsourced custodial services). Instead, our schools continued to become safer.

The special education department objected to Mr. Schweitzer’s appointment as Director of Special Services. In fact, the special education department under his direction has improved dramatically and saved the taxpayers more money than it ever had in the district’s history. Out-district placements are decreasing, special ed lawsuits have virtually disappeared, and parental complaints are way down.

Our school district is under constant pressure to improve academics and reduce the tax burden but the do-nothings never have a single substantial idea to move our district forward. Instead, their strategy is to complain about everything and then, at that one time when by pure chance they happen to have been right, they can holler to the skies “I told you so”.

These do-nothing malcontents are bankrupt of any leadership or accountability. They jeer from the sidelines and cheer when you stumble but they’ll never get off the bench and play ball.

Didn't take long for the blog to go off topic!

I just hope that who ever replaces O'Malley keeps the district moving forward. I'm sure the reason many complained about Dr. O'Malley was because he wasn't taking any more crap from anyone. I hope whoever replaces him has the same conviction. We certainly can't go back to the way things were. We need strong leadership!

I find it increibly ironic that the foregoing passge could easily be describing Joey's entire three-year long criticism of the Aberdeen Township Council...

Or, his criticism of the BOE before he became a member...

Of course, Joey would say he "got off the bench and played ball." But, might I remind you that Joey quickly packed up his ball and took it back home to New York, which in the end, makes the foregoing passage all the more laughable from our now non-resident assclown Joey Warren...

Joey, it's time to remind your readers that you, Kenney and Donohue gave a 9 per cent raise to an administrator while 30 or so employees of the district were let go AND while people of this community were losing homes to high taxes.
Not that I blame Dr Dick for leaving. It was a very good move and I wish him well. Maybe he'll play the board members in Edison the same way he played YOU, KENNEY and DONOHUE.
There is something I would like to ask you..what's the deal with DELANEY? Does he ever take a shower or cut his nails? His hygiene seems like it's one step below a NEANDERTHAL.
By the way did I mention that you, Kenney and Donohue gave a 9 per cent raise to an administrator while 30 or so employees of the district were let go AND while people of this community were losing homes to high taxes.

So basically we folded to everyone in the district who complained - thought they knew more than those in charge....

The squeaky wheels got oiled - and that is MARSD in a nutshell.

Special interests all over the district....if you dont like it sue and if you sue we will do what you want at any cost....

Maybe should've joined the BOE to get special treatment for my family.

Boy I'm sure happy my kid goes to school here. You are right- I should go to more BOE meetings and ask for things all other students do not get....

Listen Warren, i am not a fan of all your ideas, but I give you credit for having little to gain by joining the BOE except for you ego. But you gave your time up none the less as other seats go unopposed year after year in Matawan and we wonder why we lose kids to SJV, RBC, Mater Dei, MAST, and High Tech HS - no meddling BOE there to care of their agendas.

We lose kids to those other districts because their parents want to make sure that they make their choice of sports teams.

O'Malley did great things for our district, but people like Tagliarini and Buccalato really don't care because they sent their kids to private school. Tagliarini had to find somewhere that would let a mediocre baseball player on the team.

Here are some facts which are not immune to logic. First the budget shortfall was $6 million, not 7 after you deduct money that was hidden in surplus. To really be fair, not as you suggest, after reviewing the board minutes some people did complain at the school baord meeting about the raises, and you and the others still decided on large increases when others could barely pay mortgages and taxes. You probably understand that a little better now. Of all the changes O'Malley made, and you listed, little if any have proven to make a difference to what once was. Our three schools of highest learning did not make AYP and were place on Early Warning. WE have a drastic increase in personnel and salaries in the business office. We have a lame duck superintendent for the next tthree months. Only three months to find a new superintendent with limited experience from within. Questionable tech director. Questionable custodial staff. SAT scores not improving. Graduation rates not improving. Teachers not under contract, with bad morale throughout.
Would O'malley have done the same without the raise you ask? You, bectha, as all along as many stated he was just using this district as a stepping stone to bigger and better things.
Schools continue to be safer you say. You should ask some of the staff that same question and you will find different results than your under reported statistics.
We do have more nurses. The Donaghue family was taken care of with jobs and benefits. Special education has never been better. I wonder why.

Aberdeener said...

Anon,

We had a $7 million shortfall. After Christie raided the surplus funds, I don't recall how much of surplus we had left to apply to the budget but it wasn't a million dollars.

The three public members who argued against the raises were meeting regulars - two former board members and one nyc teacher who was trying to convince the board to offer later start times for the high school. The nyc teacher didn't even know we were voting on raises that day.

As for AYP, I don't know what's happened recently but last year was the first time ever all the schools in the district made AYP.

We hired one additional person for the accounting office and cut administrative staff everywhere else. For the first time in recent memory, our books are in order and we're holding costs down.

Thanks for proving my point about just complaining and not offering any substantial ideas for improving the district.

OK here it goes. Here is my insight on the Dr. O Malley departure. Dr. O Malley did what he needed to do for his family. While here Dr. O Malley was far better as a school super than his predecessor ever was. That fact no matter the wild criticisms were, are or will be heaped upon him prior to his departure or that often comes with such leadership. Dr. O Malley had a predecessor who was too mired in internal and divisive politics, allowed himself to be improperly controlled and was far too easily pushed around by too powerful and controlling teachers, arrogant and egotistically manipulative school board members. And if I need to remind everyone that same predecessor raised the school taxes by $20,000,000.00 in a very short time. All the while the former school super also failed to properly monitor, implement and prioritize the $38,000,000.00 school construction referendum debacle. That may be history to some but it is very costly to the taxpayers history.

So Dr. O Malley came here at the tail end of those arrogant and egotistical school board members reign, faced many problems and he implemented a strong change in instructional, financial changes and more to our district that also culminated in significant financial restrictions being placed upon school budgets everywhere by the state that Dr. O Malley dealt with effectively. Add to that the tough decisions that had to be made as to employees, privatization of services and more. Finally, he did along with effective teachers improve test scores significantly, got taxpayers to better understand the budgets, who in turn passed a budget for the first time after many, many years of failed budgets.

Many will disagree with me but I can only point out and say very strongly that the time that Dr. O Malley was here he did much in a far more positive manner. Those positives versus the prior six years where test scores remained in the basement annually, millions in tax payers monies were spent haphazardly and arrogance ruled the school board is gone despite the critics who will attack this post.

Far too many criticize men like Dr. O Malley from anonymous positions with far less proofs, facts, insight or a truly balanced opinion. Attacks upon such a mans leadership have only really come from financial decisions, cuts in staffing, changes in leadership and more that did not sit well with the deeply entrenched.

I would be remiss if I did not point out that the opinions or lack there of were non existent from the messes of the prior years and the repeated failure of leadership previous to Dr. O Malley coming here, which leads me to believe that much of the anonymous criticism and more have come from those displaced, brought to task or some others within the classrooms and school educational structure that were too happy or a significant part of the prior leadership mess.

Finally my problem with Dr. O Malley as he leaves was in his failure to address the too top heavy administrative positions and other assorted questionable staff, positions and more that Dr. O Malley leaves this district without making the necessary changes the taxpayers deserve and needed to occur during his time here. I wish Dr. O Malley good luck and urge all who read this to be vocal on the next school super hired to lead our school district.

I loved Mr. Kenny's statement that "ALL IS WELL" in MARSD - almost trying to justify Dr. O in the first place. All of the wonderful things he has done - not the administrators or teachers who do the dirty work??

AND THE CRIME and VANDALISM down 60% ?? I have many friends who teach and quite a few on both town forces- made a few texts and they all said it was LAUGHABLE.

One - statistics could easily be manipulated - 6o% of reported incidents? or 60% of incidents they want to tell us about?

You cant report an incident if there is no one to tell it to - no head of security in the district or some sort of position like that.

But Mr. Kenny told me that my kids go to Shangli- La so I believe him, he is a lawyer of course and they never lie....or bend the truth - or misinterpret facts as fiction or vice versa... right?

NEXT QUESTION - Is the BOE going to spend 18,000 on another head hunter to find a replacement? Do not forget Mat - Ab residents that 18000 was spent 3 years ago to find Dr. O - before they gave him, JG, and Sue more money....

you said she took a pay freeze

THAT MEANS - she denied herslef a raise she was due - she FORFETED a raise she had coming to her....

I dont remember hearing that anywhere.... or reading it either - So , master of the spin,

Did she publically for go a raise of some sort or was already in place? Same as Dr. O - did he publically foreit certain "benefits" as you called them or was thir reduction already going to happen regardless of the mass layoffs??

ANSWER THE QUESTION - stop the jibber jabber/....

Mr. Anon - so no one gets mad I have no name said...

So the pay freeze was in the old contract.

It was not out of the kindness of her blessed heart or because 30 people lost their jobs - it was a preexisting contract.

WOW Joey - YOU JUST HAVE TO BE RIGHT.... all the time - how sad...

Aberdeener said...

Sorry but if you insist on being ignoramuses I can't help you.

Irons was only on a one-year contract so a pay freeze couldn't have been in her contract.

You can look here if you don't know the definition of "pay freeze".

As for O'Malley, we discussed his contract extension multiple times and he took a benefits cut.

JUST MORE KAUFF LIES LIKE ALL IS FINE IN TOWN.

CAN'T HARDLY WAIT FOR 2011 BUDGET TO PRINT.

I WONDER WHAT IT MUST BE LIKE TO WORK IN TOWN HALL KNOWING YOUR ELECTED LEADERSHIP ONLY WANT TO PROTECT THEIR CAMPAIGN BENEFACTORS AND THEIR UNELECTED AND THOROUGHLY CORRUPT LEADER A.K.A. N. KAUFF.

IT CANNOT BE GOOOD FOR EMPLOYEE MORALE.

IT CANNOT BE GOOD FOR THE TAXPAYERS.

IT CANNOT BE GOOD FOR NEEDED SEWERS, BAD ROADS AND MORE WE TAXPAYERS NEED OR WE HAVE BEEN PROMISED TIME AND TIME AGAIN .

LOOKS LIKE I RETIRED JUST IN TIME.

Joey, it's time to remind your readers that you, Kenney and Donohue gave a 9 per cent raise to an administrator while 30 or so employees of the district were let go AND while people of this community were losing homes to high taxes.
Yes Joey you did! Thank you for looking out for Dr Dick because he really was looking out for the district and taxpayers. Please, thank Kenney and Donohue also as they are responsible for that 9 per cent raise. I don't know what we would do here if you 3 weren't looking out for us.
So without further ado, it's time to remind your readers that you, Kenney and Donohue gave a 9 per cent raise to an administrator while 30 or so employees of the district were let go AND while people of this community were losing homes to high taxes.
