Aberdeen's Top Earners

Across the nation, there’s been a lot of talk about the public sector’s salaries, work benefits, health plans, and pensions. And there’s no reason to exempt Aberdeen Township from the discussion.

Among the top earners, 1st prize goes to our former police chief, Joseph Kelly, who’s receiving an annual pension of $104,000. 2nd prize goes to our councilman, James Lauro. After serving our community for over 40 years, with a final average salary of $145,563.67, Councilman Lauro is earning an annual pension of $98,569.68, plus another $13,000 a year for his service as councilman and fire commissioner. (Need we mention again that he voted last year to raise his commissioner’s salary?) The booby prize goes to our disgraced former town manager, Mark Coren, who’s receiving an annual pension of $82,000 plus health coverage.

Last year, John Quinn earned $104,000 from the township and another $36,000 from Matawan. Police Chief John Powers earned $138,000 and his number two, Richard Derechailo earned $132,000. Town Manager, Joe Criscuolo only earned $122,000.

Of the township’s 35 police officers, 29 earned above $92,000, another two officers earned $88,000, and only the remaining four officers were below the highest brackets.

I bear no grudge against anyone for earning the above salaries. To my knowledge, none of the above ever threatened to endanger the township during contract negotiations and every person is entitled to honorably pursue the highest salary and benefits he can muster. Furthermore, excluding the pay-to-play payoffs, the vast majority of the township employees have performed exemplary.

However, the question for the taxpayers is whether the community can afford such generous compensation or if we can get the same outstanding service at a lower cost.

A simple resolution at the state level would be to cap the benefits of future retirees and, once the public employee has reached his cap, all further retirement contributions would be diverted to a 401K plan. Till then, the only alternative is to reduce headcount and outsource services.

On a side note, an anonymous commenter took issue with me including the salary history of the teachers union officers as one of the factors prompting tax increases, arguing their salaries are a tiny part of the overall budget. Well, I hope the commenter isn’t one of our math teachers.

The current crop of union officers saw their salaries increase a combined $162,091.60 from 2006 to 2009. During that same period, the school tax levy increased $1,407,437. Not including pension liabilities, those 12 union officers accounted for 11.5% of the school property tax increases. And, unlike the above mentioned township workers, the union officers have frequently undermined our children’s education and threatened the operation of our school district.

If names are going to be named, I hope you are going to list the school district employees with similar salaries. You know the teachers that work part of the year, have snow days, holidays, and weekends off during that part of year. You are picking on the police department so you need to post the school district that you were a part of allowing these raises to happen. I think you will find an enormous amount of teachers with equal or better taxpayers money going in their pockets as the police. Well, they have created a gangland atmosphere in the schools so maybe they deserve corrections officer pay. Matawan schools are abusers of taxpayers money.

Thats Joseph Kelly and he will be coming back as the new Township Manager to collect a few more dollars from Aberdeen. Say a 100,000 plus. He was the best police chief in the history of Aberdeen. Just ask Coren and all the secret meetings between the two in his office over the years.

5:53 once again adds nothing to a very important subject and the decade + long monumental problem we taxpayers have to pay to keep Normie and his corrupt democratic party in corrupt control. We will continue to pay and pay instead of fair and just Pay to Play rules being put to safeguard us. Pay to Play could be put in place but will not happen all due to the proofs shown in the all CAPS post above.

Its just another post about Normie and why the taxpayers will never stand a chance as long as the evil being that is Normie continues his dictatorial and unquestioned control of our community.

Won't just one council person stand up for us?

Unfortunately we all know the answer.

Last time they got rid of one of these managers it is rumored that three or four employees who helped Kauff accomplish his mission got a little something in there stocking. It is said those few all got a nice pay boost not long after the last guy got the heave ho. No honor among thieves. The battle is coming. Keep your eyes on Kauff. I hope the employees band together. I agree with the post about cops here and cops in NYC. This is Mayberry RFD compared to NYC. If you think otherwise your fooling yourself. Look in the mirror 1st. How much is the budget total here in Mayberry by the way. When I moved in from the Island I wanted lower taxes. That idea is gone since moving day.

Then go back to the island. Maybe you could venture even farther, across the bridge, and move near your pal Joey.

Another city transplant who thinks that this is Mayberry and nothing here can compare to the streets of NYC. Yet they are from Staten Island where you supposed to be scared of some guy in a velour sweatshirt sitting in front of a pork store. This place was alot more peaceful before people like you came over the bridge. Alot less conjested also but you almost have it just as bd as Staten Island.

What like County Road is the South Bronx. Half of the cops never come to my neighborhood. They are scared pure and simple. If they arent scared why are the same dealers at the same house on the end of my block for six months now? We called and let them know what we see. But nothing happens. At what they seem to get paid thats alot for me and mine to live down the street from dealers all this time.

Anyone can adjust to their surroundings. People can adjust to warzones. Just depends on if they want to adjust. Asbury Park is right down the parkway which is a pretty good comparison to New York. Alot of people from the Bayshore area work down there.

Anonymous said...

People just don't understand the laws in New Jersey and how much rights the criminals have in this state. You have to basically get lucky to take down a drug dealer. If your not right on point the dealer will get off. Not to mention most of these towns don't have enough officers to fill the regular shifts, follow up on reports, and do special details and watch over drug dealing houses. Sorry but its a true fact. The rest of the town does not stop because you are having a problem with one house.

Aberdeener said...

I disagree. If there's a known drug dealing house in the neighborhood then the police need to shut it down. It's the broken windows theory.

One night, my father, brother, and I were leaving the synagogue on Lloyd Rd. at about 2AM. A patrolman pulled over to ask us what we were doing. We were thrilled knowing the bad guys would migrate to areas with less scrutiny.

You never want criminals to feel comfortable committing crimes.

Anonymous said...

I am a 5/0 as you put it and proud of it. I don't care what you think of me as long as I do my job fair and serve the community I work in. You don't know what I see or do everyday. When you put on my shoes and do my job I will guarantee you will think different. Its not all about dealing with violence or not, or how much crime is in a community. Its a matter of responding when called and acting in a proactive manner during down time to prevent these communities not to turn into these troublesome areas. When you call (oh and you will call at sometime) a police officer will be there without a doubt in mind. You all had the opportunity to take the test and become a police officer. If you didn't do it that is your choice.

Anonymous said...

This is not NY and not TV you can't just walk up kick down the door and shut down an alleged drug house. Unfortunately it doesn't work like that.

Aberdeener said...

Are you suggesting the police don't know how to secure a warrant to investigate a known drug house?

As for the officer who posted, I don't think anybody is questioning the excellent job the ATPD is doing. It's only a question of what we can afford and whether there are alternatives. A repeated suggestion has been to merge the Matawan and Aberdeen police departments.

Anonymous said...

I am sure Alston would run NYPD!!!!!

"However, the question for the taxpayers is whether the community can afford such generous compensation or if we can get the same outstanding service at a lower cost."

Joey, I think it is ironic that you give the above quote regarding township employees but you choose to give the school district administrators, 6.7 and 9% raises that brought their salaries to $130K and $185K.

Anonymous said...

Both Matawan and Aberdeen need to take a stand despite the laws and not fund the public library for a few years. They have a major surplus there and if I am correct are given a large amount of cash a year between both towns. Force them to use there surplus if needed. As for merging, they need to start small like reacreation, code enforcement, or the almost none existent Matawan road department.

THEY ARE QUITE GENEROUS AND PERHAPS A REVIEW IS NEEDED OR AT LEAST AN EFFICIENCY REVIEW OR JOB DESCRIPTION BREAKDOWN? THAT IS WHAT OUR LEADERSHIP SHOULD BE THINKING ABOUT. I DON'T NORMALLY WRITE IN CAPS BUT IT GETS AT LEAST ONE PERSONS IRE UP WHILE THEY UNFORTUNATELY NEVER EVER ADD TO THE SUBJECT.

Maybe its just me or does it seem that the higher you get in your position the less you do? It seems that an efficiency review might be money well spent in our local municipal building. Prove to me what they do to earn these salaries. Perhaps some changes in the supervisory layers of some departments deserves review. There are many questions that deserve some reviewing and accountability to assure prudent spending. I am also very troubled by the capping posts and the significant payments of professional services if the suggested numbers are in fact correct. If they are correct the police salaries that protect us need to investigate, prosecute and incarcerate these supposed professionals as those costs would be attuned to highway robbery. Does anyone in leadership have a spec of decency and concern for the taxpayers if such professional costs are not watched closely.

Damn right commuter 1. I agree that the numbers for those highlighted need to be proven. The two top police salaries seem excessive for a department this size. What do we have 25 cops in town. Most of these towns print the police responses to prove or warn the residents of the police activities and results in the community area. I have lived here for three years and have never see our town listed in those news briefs. I would like to know what is going on if for no other reason than to be pre-warned of what may have occurred near my home and family.

Anonymous said...

Concerned commuter if you are saying you live in Matawan and they have 25 officers you are incorrect. After the two layoffs and the now close to a year suspension (with pay about $140,000 plus) of the Chief of Police the Borough is down to 22 officers. The officer's salary mentioned in this article are that of Aberdeen Township. They have approximately 35 or so officers.

I was missed informed.

I believe that is 20 with the Chief of Police suspension still going on. That department has not been that low since the 80's. That is not good no matter how you twist it. There wer no traffic lights in the center of town in the 80's and the police directed traffic. Not to mention I am sure the population in town was no where near what it is now.

Hey college idiot you're wrong said...

Hey college idiot. The size of Matawan warrants that number of officers based on population. Here is a hint college boy/girl/tranny the size of a town, population and other factors concludes the number of officers required. But of course you knew that for all that money your wasting at college. Here is a hint the commonsense that you do not have shows why you could not figure out that the post from Commuter was a resident of Aberdeen since the title of the post is "Aberdeen's Top Earners" genius. Stop wasting your money. Quit school and read Mad Magazine as it will give you the same thing that you seem to have not gotten in school so far. Then again you are probably a graduate of our waste of a $chool $y$tem.

Do that and you can graduate Magna Cum Scumbag. Right Norm?

I notice that many salaries were missing from this post. How about just listing how many employees make over 100 thousand dollars or maybe even 75 thousand? That may give us all a real view as to who really makes how much and for doing what. Perhaps a job title or job description matched up to these salaries as well. Please don't get me wrong as I appreciate the work and services we pay for in town. I strongly feel that when you see workers in town they are not standing around doing nothing. When you go to use a ball field it is clean. When we had our last snow we were far better off. The town is clean and homes maintained. All this takes manpower and services to accomplish, maintain and regulate. The one other thing I think could also possibly be released is the totals paid to any outside agency that does work in town over 10 thousand dollars. Many of us who frequent this blog site see comments about the as stated handpicked professionals that are often questioned, criticized and more. I think that information would be helpful. Finally a thank you to the blog site operator for this site and its information.

Pertinent article posted today at the Huffingtonpost by Robert Reich: The Shameful Attack on Public Employees"

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/robert-reich/the-shameful-attack-on-pu_b_805050.html

"...Public servants are convenient scapegoats. Republicans would rather deflect attention from corporate executive pay that continues to rise as corporate profits soar, even as corporations refuse to hire more workers. They don't want stories about Wall Street bonuses, now higher than before taxpayers bailed out the Street. And they'd like to avoid a spotlight on the billions raked in by hedge-fund and private-equity managers whose income is treated as capital gains and subject to only a 15 percent tax, due to a loophole in the tax laws designed specifically for them.

It's far more convenient to go after people who are doing the public's work -- sanitation workers, police officers, fire fighters, teachers, social workers, federal employees -- to call them "faceless bureaucrats" and portray them as hooligans who are making off with your money and crippling federal and state budgets. The story fits better with the Republican's Big Lie that our problems are due to a government that's too big.

Above all, Republicans don't want to have to justify continued tax cuts for the rich. As quietly as possible, they want to make them permanent.

But the right's argument is shot-through with bad data, twisted evidence, and unsupported assertions...." It continues.

Anon @ 11:52

Your reposting of their argument is way, way off the mark. You're trying to compare the private sector to the public sector. I will concede that the bailouts were unjustified, but that was a decision that we did not get to make.

The private sector goes out and produces something, a good, a service & etc. Any revenues, profits and bonuses... guess what happens to those, they get TAXED. Corporate tax, payroll tax, personal income tax. Gov't doesn't produce anything, they just collect the tax money. Now I don't know about you, by my person income has not gone up 3, 4 or 5 percent year over year in the past decade. If Gov't is not collecting the tax revenue to cover it's spending... then it has to spend less. Gov't either has to learn to do more with less or they have to cut wasteful spending. How they do that is up to each municipality.

When the economy was humming along, no one was complaining about all the money being made in the private sector... because the tax receipts were coming in. And let's be honest here, the average person living here in Aberdeen, was/is not some corporate CEO raking in millions each year (which they paid taxes on), but rather a regular 9 - 5 guy. And as for all the b/s about tax breaks for the rich... you can go back and check your history, there were more tax breaks for the middle and lower class than were give to the upper class. In fact under those tax cuts, many more people found themselves in a class that had zero federal tax liability... in fact they got more back then they paid in.

But let's get back to Aberdeen... no one is calling out in officers who walk the beat everyday and protect our streets, but rather those who make the decisions at townhall. Elected and unelected party bosses who control our town council like Jim Henson. Turn your eye to these individuals, they are the ones that pilfer the publics money, and then when there is an economic crisis turn to us tax payers to pay for their criminal ways.

Anon @ 11:59,

You wrote: "Gov. doesn't produce anything. They just collect the tax money."

I say: Government, by the express design of its citizens, provides the community with essential services. Hell, the private sector doesn't produce anything much anymore either, America has a mostly service economy. Government plays a HUGELY beneficial role in that it actually pays its workers living wages. The modern private sector down sizes, contracts out cheaply to independents , out sources overseas, merges, acquisitions, lays off its work force and generally looks to its own bottom line with no thought to feeding the general economic engine. Unlike good ole smarty pants Henry Ford who upped his workers salaries and the economic health of the entire nation as a result!

You wrote: "And as for all the b/s about tax breaks for the rich... you can go back and check your history, there were more tax breaks for the middle and lower class than were give to the upper class."

I say: the tax rates on the upper brackets are among the lowest rates in the last hundred years. http://www.ntu.org/tax-basics/history-of-federal-individual-1.html

The fact that the upper 1 percent pays over 25 percent of the nation's taxes does not impress me in the least since they possess 85 percent of the nation's wealth, they should be paying 85 percent of our taxes! Put that in your pipe and smoke it! ; )

You wrote: "no one is calling out the officers who walk the beat everyday and protect our streets,"

I say: Actually, the Aberdeener is expressly calling out the officers when he writes..."Of the township’s 35 police officers, 29 earned above $92,000, another two officers earned $88,000, and only the remaining four officers were below the highest brackets." as he has similarly tried to shame our teachers, our maintenance workers, and others on this site. Why not have done with it and go full out Puritan on their butts? Erect public stockades where we can lock them in so we can all line up and pelt our civic workers with food! Or dunking stools, that would be fun too. Our children will be so proud.

Not a drop of Italian blood in me, so i don't exactly frequent pizza parlors, never watched "Jersey Shore". Never lived in Staten Island, so don't lump me with that group. But keep up your assumptions. Face it, Aberdeen is nothing to be proud of, but how would you know, your too afraid to open your eyes to the real world. Anon from January 6, 2011 @ 6:42 PM

The private sector does not produce any more because of over regulation and taxation run amok. Our founding fathers never intended Gov't to be the "end all, be all" for the citizens. Gov't is not the only entity that pays it's workers. I personally know people who pull down over $80k driving a truck and deliveing goods. They are taxpaying Teamsters by the way too and have generous benefits. Our Gov't both Fed, State & local cannout contiune down the path that it's on without collapse. I for one would rather work harder to earn more rather than have any Gov't give me a hand out... because that hand comes with strings.

Fact, the top 1% pay over 50% percent not 25%. You say "they should pay 85%". Guess what, at one point and time in this country, the top marginal rate was 70%. This tax rate was changed in 1981... and guess what, over the next 8 yrs after the the tax was lowered, revenues to the Fed Gov't doubled. In addition, this country enjoyed it's longest end greatest post WWII economic run... smoke that grasshopper.

As for your issue with the aberdeener trying to call out municipal workers, prior to his posting, and I can only speak for myself, I did not know how much the average officer in the township made. Same for the teachers too. Now I will never demean either at they both play an intrical role in out community. BUT, from having been a Teamster at one point in my life, I do know first hand that unions often do what is not in the best interest of their memebers. And let's be honest, who ever grew up saying I want to be a millionair 2nd grade teacher. Most, if not all who got into teaching, did so because of the pride and enjoyment that teaching brings. Now let's look at reality here, what is there about 6600 properties in the township (according to the 2000 census), that pay on average $8000 a year in taxes. That's over $52.800mil annually. With 65% going towards the schools. That leaves $18.480 mil left over. With the #'s given below for saleries for the police and factoring pension and benefits, it would take approx $4mil a year for the police dept. What happens to the rest of the money... where does it go. Our fire house is in shambles... some thing is wrong here with the people who pull the purse strings. How about putting your pipe down and pointing some fingers in their direction. How about the funnly land deal for Vinci... how about funny COAH business for the development that was supposed to be done over in the Cliffwood section and the town attorny lying to the public. Or the farce that has played out with the old South River Metals property over on Church St. You know when the Sr housing will be built there... when you and I are old and both smoking our pipes for medicinal purposes.

Now you can have your opinion about Joe Warren all you like... he's a big boy and can defend himself. But there is problems with big Gov't, and what we have here at the local level.
